Royal Life Saving WA is using their strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across regional WA to engaging Indigenous Australians in water safety.
As a reflection of this, the REFLECT Reconciliation Action Plan has been released and will serve as a new chapter for the organisation that has operated across WA since 1909.
The plan has been prepared by a working group, consisting of seven members, in consultation with the federal body, Reconciliation Australia to provide Indigenous people with opportunities to engage in water safety education and obtain aquatic qualifications that lead to employment within WA's aquatic industry.
Royal Life Saving WA chief executive Peter Leaversuch said the plan was focused on more than just increasing participation numbers.
Rather, Mr Leaversuch said he hoped to see a significant shift in the way the industry accepts and engages with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
