An elderly Northam man is in hospital in Perth following an alleged serious assault that occurred at his home on Saturday evening.
About 7:00pm, a 75-year-old man located a person removing a broken scooter from the garage of his Newcastle Road residence, and challenged him.
It is alleged the offender punched the victim and stomped on his head, causing the victim to lose consciousness.
It is further alleged the offender dragged the victim into the garden and continued to punch him until a neighbour intervened.
The victim received serious facial injuries and was taken by St John Ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital.
It is further alleged the offender stole the victim's Mazda 2 vehicle and crashed it on Kennedy Street, hitting a sign post and another vehicle.
He was detained by members of the public until police arrived and arrested him.
During the man's arrest police deployed OC spray.
A 29-year-old man from Northam has been charged with 'unlawful act or omission with intent to harm (endangering life, health or safety of any person)'.
He was refused bail and appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday.
The investigation into other aspects of the incident is ongoing and further charges are expected to be laid.
