January school holidays saw 31 young athletes from Northam & Districts Little Athletics Centre aged from Under 6 to U17 compete at the annual Little Athletics WA Country Championships in Margaret River.
Present at the event were 17 other regional little athletics centres including Eastern Goldfields, Albany, Bunbury and Geraldton amounting to 335 young and eager athletes who competed over three days.
The athletic event was featured on GWN several times over the weekend showcasing how well supported this event is.
Our athletes gave their best receiving a total of 71 medals - 28 gold, 18 silver and 25 bronze medals. A 20-year-old 800m Country Championship record was broken by U15 Cody Stanfield.
All the athletes achieved personal bests in many of their events. Several of our athletes have now qualified for the Little Athletics WA State Track & Field Championships due to be held next month at the HBF State Athletic Stadium.
A major feature of the championship weekend is the parade showcasing all the club's banners marching with pride around the 400m track.
This year our club was successful in winning the Best Centre in the Parade due to our sun smart uniform and marching prowess.
We all experienced the usual exhaustion, wind burn and challenging situations that accompany Country Championships.
Super congratulations to all our extraordinary little athletes for having big hearts and giving their very best. Overall NDLAC came third with Bunbury coming first, closely followed by Eastern Goldfields.
Many thanks to parents, grandparents and family came down to Margaret River to participate and watch their young athlete.
The Club is very grateful to parents for giving their kids the best possible opportunity to compete at Country Championships.
