Cash grants help local sporting clubs kick health goals

Are you a sports club that wants to provide healthier food and drinks to your participants?

Applications are open for the Healthy Sporting Club Program with $300,000 up for grabs to purchase canteen equipment and train canteen managers on how to provide healthier food and drink options.

The Healthy Sporting Club Program consists of a winter and summer funding round, which provides up to $4,000 to local clubs.

Health minister Roger Cook the funding would help local sport clubs promote healthy lifestyles to members and spectators.

"Sport clubs are ideally placed to role model healthy behaviours, as healthy eating fuels a healthy body, improving physical performance both on and off the field," he said.

"Through this program clubs have been able to attend nutrition seminars, and we have helped clubs purchase canteen items to help improve the availability of healthy foods.

"Congratulations to all clubs that have received funding and good luck to all clubs applying in the current round."

In 2019, the program run by Healthway provided $305,826 funding to 86 local sport clubs across the state to help increase healthy options at club-run canteens or kiosks.

The Winter Healthy Sporting Club Program saw $184,333 shared amongst 51 sporting clubs across WA, and the Summer Healthy Sporting Club Program saw $121,493 shared amongst 35 clubs across WA.

Applications for the 2020 Winter Healthy Sporting Club program close at 12 noon, Friday March 13.
