A project that will see the York Avon River forshore redeveloped and given a new lease on life is underway, with demolition works currently taking place ready for construction later this month.
The $1.05 million project has been jointly funded by LotteryWest, the federal government and the Shire of York.
Currently closed to the public for demolition on internal roads and carparks, Avon Park, once complete, will include a nature play playground, a skatepark, new paths and gardens, a raised and sheltered performance area, and refurbished toilets, barbecues and shelters.
Shire of York president Denese Smythe said the new park would provide York residents and visitors a recreation area that could be enjoyed by people of all ages.
"I am really excited to see the redevelopment of Avon Park is finally happening," Ms Smythe said.
"This park is a real asset to York and was in need of an upgrade.
"We are very lucky to have a park and river so close to the centre of town and I am sure the community and visitors will love it when it is completed."
The park will also act as a hub for the Riverside and Town walking trails.
Project managers Emerge and Associates are in the final stages of letting tenders to undertake both the park redevelopment and skate park construction.
The contractor is due to start at the end of January and works are scheduled to be completed by the end of April 2020.
The relocation of the RV Park has already taken place to the other side of the Avon River.
The Shire of York will use a $20,000 from the federal government's Community Development Grants Program tto rejuvenate and plant out the Avon River bank.
Ms Smythe thanked the community for their patience during the redevelopment of the park.
