The requirements of a dress code for Shire of Northam citizenship ceremonies, requested by the federal government, has been finalised by councillors.
At an ordinary council meeting on Wednesday, November 20 councillors endorsed a 'formal or smart casual' dress policy for new citizens and their guests attending ceremonies.
Recommendations by staff including the expulsion of workout attire, clothes that were 'too revealing', had rips or holes, and slogans that were 'offensive or inappropriate' were deleted from the dress code.
Shire of Northam councillors voted in the dress code unanimously without debate.
The dress code was a requirement of the Department of Home Affair during a review of the Citizenship Ceremonies Code.
As part of the review individual councils are to establish their own codes for ceremonies and provide a copy of their Dress Code to the Department of Home Affairs.
