An injury prevention not-for-profit is working with a Wheatbelt local government to combat the leading cause of hospitalisation in the town.
The Building Stronger Seniors program, led by Injury Matters is underway in Bruce Rock, a 10-week program tailored to build strength, confidence and longevity in the participants by preventing falls and related injuries.
Falls are the leading injury causing hospitalisations in Bruce Rock.
There were 68 hospitalisations due to a fall in Bruce Rock between 2012 and 2016, and 69 per cent were within people aged 65 and older.
The Shire of Bruce Rock, along with MVB Personal Training and Fitness, is running the fitness program funded through a Stay On Your Feet grant.
Injury Matters injury prevention manager Rachel Meade said the program was tailored to build strength, confidence and longevity, which would assist in keeping older adults in their homes longer through the prevention of falls and injury.
She said the program offers space to come together and form a community to prevent social isolation among older adults.
"There are currently few programs for the older Bruce Rock community to improve their movement and fitness," she said.
"We know regular strength and balance exercises can help older people in preventing falls, and even find it easier to complete their daily tasks."
Ms Meade said to prevent falls people are encourage to move their bodies, improve their health and remove hazards.
The Stay On Your Feet Move Improve Remove campaigns provide information, resources, and education to on how to keep active and alert to prevent slips, trips and falls.
