Federals Football club will be taking part in the Avon Football Association grand finals this weekend at Quairading oval in both grades after our League side held off a determined Beverley Redbacks in the preliminary final last Sunday in quite warm conditions.
The game started at a hectic pace with both sides flexing their muscles trying to gain the upper hand and it was Federals who were successful kicking two early goals and another late in the term, only to see Beverley respond with two goals of their own to end the first quarter with Federals leading by seven points. Scores: Federals 3.1 (19) to Beverley 2.0 (12).
The second term was evenly contested going by the scoreboard. Federals had the ball in their forward line numerous times but goal front inaccuracy prevented them from extending their lead as they kicked 3 goals, 7 points while Beverley kicked 4 goals, 3 points, reducing Federals' lead to five points at the long break. Scores: Federals 6.8 (44) to Beverley 6.3 (39).
The third term is known as the premiership quarter; and this is where the game was won as Federals ran all over the Redbacks with fierce tackling and greater desire to win the hard ball seeing them add 5 goals, 6 points while Beverley scored 3 goals, 2 points to extend Federals' lead out to 21 points as the term ended. Scores: Federals 11.14 (80) to Beverley 9.5 (59).
The last term was simple maths - if they score we must score and that's how the game was played out with Federals determined not to let Beverley in with a sniff of victory and in trying conditions all credit must go to all players of both sides as they fought it out goal for goal to see Federals as the victors by 25 points. Final scores: Federals 16.14 (110) to Beverley 13.7 (85).
Best Players: Jack Blaauw, Cameron Lawler, Luke Tanner, Alistair Smith and Dylan Nelson.
NETBALL
Unfortunately our Federal Fillies were defeated by arch rivals Railways by three goals and have missed out on a grand final berth, but overall have had a great season. A special thanks to Lisa Williamson for all her hard work.
Congratulations are also in order to Reynard McIntosh for taking out the overall Reserves Fairest and Best award in Avon Football Association for 2019.
So next Sunday, September 15 be at Quairading oval to support your respective teams and witness two great games of football. The Reserves Federals will play York and in the big one its Federals once again taking on the might of the Keller/Tammin Kats. While in the netball final Railways will be up against Cunderdin.
Best of luck to all clubs and drive safely.
