Low water levels in the Avon River have meant more than half of this year's Avon Descent power boat competitors did not finish the race.
Only 17 of the 45 power boat teams made it across the finish line of the two-day event, which left Northam last Saturday morning.
There was similar success rates for the paddle-craft competitors, with 116 of 159 competitors crossing the finish line in both Toodyay and Bayswater.
Shire of Northam president Chris Antonio said the challenging conditions made for an exciting event.
"The Avon Descent is one of the world's most preeminent boating events because you never know what the water levels will be like," he said.
"I spoke to a few finishers afterwards and they said although it was challenging, it wasn't bad.
"It is part of the uniqueness of the race.
"I congratulate all of the starters - it is a great effort to even get to the start."
Mr Antonio also congratulated the Shire of Northam staff for their organisation of the annual Avon River Festival last Friday night.
He said the family friendly nature of the event helped contribute to the reports of no police incidents over the weekend.
"It was encouraging to see the level of involvement and effort put into the parade, not just from businesses but from the community groups as well," he said.
