Last weekend was the first of the Northam Golf Club's gold-leaf events, the Springfield Cup; a two-day stableford competition.
This event has a perpetual trophy and the winner's name goes on the honour board for perpetuity.
Saturday, a large field were out in overcast conditions to contest the first round of the Cup, sponsored by Purslowe Tinetti Funerals.
Cold conditions and a shower or two of rain created a mixed bag of scores with a few burning the course but most with below average expectations.
Some excitement on the course when a five-foot dugite tried to hide in the woods, unfortunately it was Matt Woods who attracted the reptile's attention; a few quick steps avoided a confrontation.
It's not often that a 90-year-old is considered the favourite for this event, however with his recent form Ron Pitts was certainly a contender.
Pitts didn't let his fan base down winning the first round with an outstanding 41 points.
An eagle on the par five number eighteenth hole wasn't enough for Mike Spadaccini to beat Pitts, however his score of 39 points would put him in good stead for day two.
Cold showers were forecast over the weekend, not raining on the course but in the change rooms due to the heater expiring, a tragedy narrowly avoided thanks to Blackwell Plumbing for fixing the heaters in time for the weekend.
On Sunday the second round of the Springfield Cup, sponsored by Grafton Electrics, produced another good field of players.
With the ground being softer and the greens faster any player was capable of a high score and possibly taking the Cup from the leaders.
Ray Wiktorski had an outstanding round of 41 points to win the second day, with Phil Becker runner-up with 36 points beating Daniel Negus and Kevin Smith on a countback.
The Springfield Cup for 2019 was won by Mike Spadaccini with two consistent days of golf; with 39 points on day one and 37 points on the second day - a total of 76 points overall.
