Northam Golf Club welcomed a string of impressive performers at the weekend, with some excellent play in a competitive day of action on the local course.
Saturday, May 18's competition was the Avon Service Specialist trophy, which was eagerly contested by a field of able golfers.
It was a par event.
As the country mulled over the best candidate at the polls, a group of informal golfers were out on the course trying to amass sufficient numbers to enable them to declare victory that night.
After careful scrutiny, most of the players failed to come close to polling sufficient numbers.
In the end it was a two-horse race that went down to the wire and had just one shot difference between the competitors.
Ron Pitts has been around for a while, the first time he voted he remembers using roman numerals.
Pitts, the near nonagenarian, had a terrific first nine, showing a range of shots and wowing the spectators with his accuracy.
His near-perfect short game set up the victory with five pars and no minuses to hit the halfway mark with a great score of plus 5.
The second nine was a little harder for the eventual victor, but he navigated them well.
However, Pitts' favourite holes, the par 3s, gave him the momentum to finish the round with plus 6.
Pitts took out the trophy for the second week in succession after defeating a gallant Mike O'Shea.
The runner-up played well and impressed with some accurate shots, before finishing with a plus 5 score.
Another worthy feat on the day was Matt Woods' eagle on the par five No 18 hole.
Pitts' achievement is made all the more impressive as he is on the verge of his 90th birthday.
The club legend has claimed victory for two straight weeks, after also lifting the Elders trophy on Saturday, May 11.
