A Northam family who has been touched by cancer is calling on the region to support the Cancer Council through this week's Australia's Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser.
Glen and Christine Dunkerton know firsthand the impacts cancer can have not only on a family but on the wider community.
Within hours of birth, their son Darcy was diagnosed with erythroleukemia, a rare acute form of leukaemia, and began chemotherapy.
Going through treatment for his first six months of life, the nearly eight-year-old has been in remission ever since, needing no more treatment apart from regular ongoing check ups.
Darcy's mother Christine said the family has experienced the generosity of the Northam community first hand.
"The work that the Cancer Council do to assist regional families to remain together and be supported is extremely important," she said.
"Without the funding, technology, research and collaborative approach the Cancer Council provides, we may not have our brave little man here with us today and for that I am personally indebted to the foundation and cause for life."
Much needed funds for the Cancer Council will be raised at the annual Biggest Morning Tea, hosted by Purslowe Tinetti Funerals in Northam.
Hosted on Thursday, May 23 from 10am to 11.30am, the morning tea has been run by the family business for 23 years.
A wine and cheese night with a silent auction will follow the morning tea from 5.30pm.
Donations are collected from businesses and auctioned off with funds going to the Cancer Council of WA.
A new addition to the morning tea is the bake off component, to be judged by local personalities.
Northam Senior High School hospitality students and the Rural Clinical School students will be providing food and drinks to those in attendance.
Entertainer Mark Schelfhout will be providing music, with Debbie Hughes of Wheatbelt Face Painting Company doing face painting and balloon twisting.
The fundraising goal for the Cancer Council event for 2019 is $18,000.
