A partnership between the Northam PCYC and a locally based fight team is working to change the public perception of combat sports.
STRYKA Fight Team joined forces with the PCYC a year ago when the previous boxing coach moved locations.
The result was the introduction of a program covering kick boxing, brazilian jiu-jitsu, muay thai and full MMA.
Northam PCYC manager Jane Atterby said the participation numbers have exceeded expectations.
Tuesday is the busiest night of the six day a week schedule, with up to 40 participants showing up, varying from mums, their kids, school students and working professionals.
Lead by experienced fighters and coaching team Guy and Fi Mead, the duo focus on fitness and discipline within the classes.
"It's not about fighting and violence, it's about confidence and fitness," said Guy.
"A lot of the kids here may have been bullied, or the bullies themselves.
"They soon learn from each other the importance of determination and attitude.
"We've seen a lot of change in the attitudes and mindsets of participants, especially some of the boys"
Guy said everyone is seen as equal when they enter the PCYC.
"It doesn't matter your gender, skin colour or your job, in here is it about your skill and determination," he said.
Although fighting in the ring is not a focus, the group has seen success with seven fighters set to compete in three major muay thai, boxing and kick boxing events in Perth over the autumn period.
"Not everyone wants to fight or be in the ring and that is fine, they don't have to," Guy said.
"We are putting Northam on the map.
"When we go to events we often out number other groups with our cheer squad."
The group has committed to competing in at least another six major promotions state wide by the end of the year.
Guy said the PCYC, in particular Jane, has done an amazing job in facilitating the boxing facilities, which he says are the best in the Wheatbelt.
"The Wheatbelt is not missing out," he said.
"Our competitors have access to the best available training resources including coaching, mentorship and equipment."
Classes are open to anyone anyone, regardless of experience for $8. Equipment is provided.
