A cyclist with a local connection has placed herself in good stead during the Northam leg of the Ring Summer Criterium Series.
Kate Bonner, niece of Shire of Northam president Chris Antonio was cheered on by spectators as she placed fourth in the women’s A grade race.
Bonner, whose family lives in Northam, is still relatively new to the sport.
“I only started cycling recreationally at the end of 2016 with my dad who has been cycling for about 12 years,” she said.
“I was encouraged by him to get a bike and do little cruisey rides.
“I started riding with my club in Perth, the South Perth Rouleurs and made some friends.
“I got into racing in September 2016 and did some C and B grade racing and thought it was fun.”
Bonner said after cycling overseas last year she is enjoying racing back at home.
“It’s great because of all the familiar faces and riding with people you know,” she said.
“I think that Perth is a little limited because it is very flat and I do have a love for some uphill climbs.
“This sort of race is more of a run challenge instead of a target race.
“It is great for fitness and if you can ride with your friends it is even better.”
Next for Bonner is the Pemberton Classic, a hilly criterium, which she says in more her specialty, before the end of the summer series.
