The WA Country Football League’s Local Drug Action Team has received more than $21,000 of additional funding to support its work in preventing and reducing alcohol and other drug-related harms at a grass-roots level.
The funding, on top of $10,000 already received by the community partnership, will support the implementation of activities in the Local Drug Action Team’s Community Action Plan including building strong and connected communities.
WACFL Club Leadership Pilot Program to establish a peer support network within the clubs, to be better positioned to respond to community needs and connect with local service providers.
The program is planning on working with football clubs including those in the Avon Football Association.
Alcohol and Drug Foundation chief executive Dr Erin Lalor said the Local Drug Action Team will play an important role in reducing harms from alcohol and other drugs in the community.
“The additional funding gives further support to the Local Drug Action Team to deliver evidence-informed alcohol and other drug harm prevention activities,” Dr Lalor said.
The Local Drug Action Team is a partnership between WA Country Football League, Regional Men's Health, Rural Health West, Holyoake, WA Country Health Service and the Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program.
The Local Drug Action Team Program is part of the Australian Government’s investment of $298 million over four years under the National Ice Action Strategy.
There are currently 172 Local Drug Action Teams across the nation and by 2020 there will be at least 220.
