The Tammin Women’s Hockey Club has scored a $2,000 sports grant from the Community TAB of Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA).
The hockey club was one of four sporting clubs to receive a grant in January, selected from over 300 sporting clubs that applied from around WA.
Tammin Women’s Hockey Club secretary Georgie Crane said receiving the grant means progress for the club.
“With the help of this funding we are able to replace old equipment, which enables our club to continue to host games in our home town with equipment of the appropriate standard necessary for both our own team and our opposition including juniors, to play safely and at a high standard,” Ms Crane said.
“Fundraising is becoming increasingly difficult in small communities with the same sponsors being asked to support all the different groups within the community, so by receiving this grant we are able to continue to support our local businesses without again asking for financial assistance.
“Despite being in a town in the Wheatbelt with a very small shire population of 450, the Tammin Women's Hockey Club continues to be able to field competitive sides year after year and runs a highly successful junior program not only for our own town but also for neighbouring towns who don’t have their own junior programs.
“The success of the club is built on encouraging everyone and anyone to get involved in the club somehow no matter what their experience or abilities, whether it's playing, taking on an office position or bringing along a plate of afternoon tea.”
RWWA chief executive Richard Burt said the organisation recognises the importance of grass roots sport throughout WA.
“We understand that it takes time and resources to keep a club running within the community, so we are pleased to be giving the opportunity to help relieve this burden on clubs,” he said.
“RWWA has been supporting the WA sport and recreation industry for many years through providing millions of dollars over 10 years to the Department of Sport and Recreation and more recently through Community TAB.”
