If you were driving down Fitzgerald Street in Northam last Saturday morning you may have noticed a team of superheros having a party, but this was not your normal party.
One thing is for sure, they are a group of community heros.
The superhero soaker party was a creation of community minded citizen and Northam Chamber of Commerce chief enthusiasm officer Esther Bliss.
Ms Bliss said he has noticed neglected empty shop windows lining up the main street of town.
“Dusty, cobweb covered windows, empty or otherwise are not the right message that we want to get out there,” she said.
“They add to any possible negative vibe about the town and I thought I’d had enough of people bagging Northam and the main street.
“I could have put a ‘who wants to wash windows with me’ but anticipated a poor turnout so created the superhero soaker party.”
Ms Bliss said the turn out included 20 volunteers of local business people and their kids.
“I want 2019 to be the year of significant community action here in Northam,” she said.
“There are so many great people already doing good things for others.
“I love it.
“My connection with Bendigo Bank and the Sponsorship committee means I’m really looking forward to getting out there and working with another community hero, James West for the benefit of our community.”
Ms Bliss said it is everyone in the community’s responsibility to better the local area.
“It will benefit the business community, tourism, sense of wellbeing, a sense of pride in Northam,” she said.
“I’m nothing special, I just know it takes one person, add another and you’ve got yourselves a community.’
Parenting is a big part of her community message said Ms Bliss.
“I want my kids to learn that life is not about just looking after yourself,” she said.
“Those volunteers on Saturday are the same.
“We are part of community here in Northam, sense of community’s essential, that connection to others.
“Its even more essential these days as we are apparently connected through social media, email and texts.
“The irony is we have never been more isolated from each other.
“Never more in need to put that phone down, get out amongst the community and do something for someone else.”
