The Northam Aero Club celebrated their 50th birthday milestone with the launch of a book commemorating the adventures and characters of the club over the past half-decade.
The book, written by aviator Ruth Wilson was launched on Saturday, November 10 at the Aero Club with past and present members of the club in attendance alongside the Shire of Northam president Chris Antonio.
The official proceedings were lead by current Aero Club president Errol Croft, who awarded plaques and copies of the book to founding members of the group.
The book titled ‘Northam Aero Club : The First Fifty Years 1968-2018’ celebrates the volunteers who brought the club to life 50-years ago.
It shares stories of members over the years and documents the history of Northam as a town put on the aviation map.
Mr Croft said the special thing about the book is that is features characters who are known to the community.
He said the book is personal and reflects the family culture the club has produced.
Fifty-years on the Northam Airstrip provides an airfield utilised by the Flying Doctor Service, Air Ambulance, fire fighting aircraft and those who check regional power lines as well as by the Aero Club members.
The book is availble for sale from the Northam Visitors Centre, the Northam Aero Club, Royal Aero Club WA Jandakot and Windward Balloon Adventures.
Author Ruth Wilson who knows the members of the club personally worked with the team dedicated to the project of the book thanks to funds raised from the 2017 Air Ballooning Championships held in Northam.
