Bakers Hill Pre-Primary and Kindergarten has been in the process of a makeover over the past two years with teachers Marie Jamieson and Jenine Pike leading the way to create a nature play area for students.
In 2016 the playground area for the Pre-Primary students at the school was made up of a metal playground and lacked colour.
Fast forward to this year and the playground has a new lease on life thanks to the teachers and an army parent volunteers.
On Wednesday, October 31 the Pre-Primary had a visit from Bunnings Midland who donated native plants to the nature play area.
Since the inception of the project the play area has been transformed.
Now inspired by the great outdoors and nature the playground is made up of a wooden wigwam, a mud kitchen, an amphitheater, paths, bridges and a wooden swing.
The play area also re-claimed some extra land from the school property to extend the space.
Pre-Primary teacher Jenine Pike said the style of play students are engaging in has changed.
“There is a lot more creativity when the kids come out to play,” she said.
“Now they are able to run around and use their imagination, giving items new life.”
Mrs Pike said injecting colour into the area had been a focus outcome.
“We had parent volunteers paint old tyres in bright colours and during our parents night we had students paint the fence pickets,” she said.
“The parents have given up their weekends to help bring our nature play idea to life.”
Mrs Pike said older students have had access to nature play for years but the younger students were missing out until the project came to life.
Still on the plans is the installation and creation of a water play area with a river flowing through the playground that will in turn water the gardens.
Working alongside the school’s P&C the Pre-Primary will be raising funds at ‘Class on the Grass’ a live music night at the school on Saturday night from 7.30 featuring band Rum Jungle.
Tickets are $20 each and include supper.
A cash licensed bar is also available.
Tickets can be purchased from the Primary School office, Bakers Hill Hardware and Professionals Avon Valley.
