The Northam SES has been presented their first automated external defibrillators thanks to a donation from the RAC.
On Wear Orange Wednesday in May, a day to thank SES volunteers, the RAC announced a donation of $100,000 in financial support to WA State Emergency Service to help help purchase life saving equipment.
The automated external defibrillators have been purchased for SES units through the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. It is the goal that every unit will have eventually have two AEDs.
The equipment was presented to the Northam SES during a meeting on Monday night by DFES district officer Colin Brown.
Mr Brown said before the donation the closest SES with an AED was Mundaring. He said in the past when the Northam SES have needed the use of an AED they would have to rely on St John Ambulance.
Mr Brown said although the equipment is typically not frequently used it is important to have access to the AED in case circumstances arise.
