A police officer from Merredin and the Kellerberrin Police Station are among finalists announced for the 2018 Nine News WA Police Excellence Awards.
Merredin Police officer Senior Constable Ben Ferris has been named as one of three finalists in the individuals category of the awards.
Constable Ferris was nominated by a community member in recognition of his role as a youth mentor in Merredin.
He has volunteered hours of his own time to start leadership projects with the youth of the town.
“The trusted relationships he has developed with young people have led to increased reporting of crime, resulting in arrests of those committing offences,” his nomination read.
“In addition, Senior Constable Ferris has regularly gone out of his way to assist those who are looking to turn their lives around.”
Kellerberrin Police Station has named as one of three finalists in the Police Team category competing against Mental Health Co-Response and Mullewa Police Station.
The team at Kellerberrin have implemented community engagement initiatives including the Kellerberrin Nyoongar Centre, the Kellerberrin Food Bank and recreational activities for young people.
They were commended for contributing significantly to the well-being of the local community which has led to a reduction in crime.
This year there were 175 across both categories recognising 62 individual officers and 42 police teams.
The winner of each category will receive $5,000 prize with the two finalists to each receive a $1,000 prize.
The winners will be announced at a breakfast awards ceremony at Crown Perth on Thursday 6 December.
