A man in York has reported concerns that he found a needle in a punnet of strawberries.
The man reported the incident at York Police Station on Monday, 17 September advising he had located the needle in his sink after preparing strawberries for his family.
He did not recall the needle being in the sink prior to preparing the strawberries.
The strawberries were produced and packaged in Western Australia.
Police are conducting inquiries into this matter and liaising with other agencies.
Members of the public are encouraged to be cautious in handling strawberries and report any discoveries to local police or by calling 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The Department of Health advises the public you can still purchase and eat locally grown strawberries but, in light of recent events, you should cut them before eating.
Health Minister Greg Hunt has ordered the national food safety watchdog to assess the states' handling of strawberry contamination.
