A male detainee from Yongah Hill Detention Centre who was admitted to hospital on Sunday has died.
Sixteen crews from the Department of Fire and Emergency services were called to Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre in Northam after a riot broke out around 8.45pm on Sunday.
The crews were called out to the facility at 10pm to attend to a fire that caused an estimated $500,000 damage to accommodation units.
The unrest started after the inmate was taken to hospital with self-harm injuries.
A spokesperson from the Australian Border Force said they express their condolences to his family and friends.
“The matter will be referred to the state coroner for investigation,” the spokesperson said.
“The Department and Australian Border Force will provide all necessary assistance to the investigation.”
