Last Saturday’s event at the Northam Golf Club was the Monthly Mug for September, sponsored by Speciale Smash Repairs.
This being the final Monthly Mug in the Northam Golf calendar for 2018, it was assured that the competition would be intense.
The assembled players resembled Speciale’s Smash repair yard, a few with minor dents but most needing a good sand blast and extensive body restoration.
Despite perfect conditions many players found the going tougher than expected, with the competition being a stroke event, one wayward shot could put the prize out of contention.
Don Bates thought the competition was over on the second hole of the day, carding a nine on the par four, however he refocused and over the remaining holes managed to come in with a nett 70 to win the event.
It has been a long time between wins for Bates; his last win was a unexpected victory in Grade 3 in the egg and spoon race.
Phil Becker was runner-up with a nett 71.
