A Northam grandmother has been named as one of eight winners in the 2018 Australia Post One Netball Community Awards.

Adele Simmons from Wheatbelt Flames Netball Club was nominated for the award for her dedication to creating a diverse and inclusive netball environment.

Netball Australia CEO, Marne Fechner, said the Awards, now in their fifth year, are designed to celebrate people who are making a genuine difference in ensuring everyone, regardless of background or ability is welcome in netball.

“This year’s winners are inspiring examples of the ethos of the Awards and demonstrate the power of passionate clubs and associations breaking down barriers and bringing people together,” she said.

Adele was selected for her thirty years of hard work and contributions to ensuring people have access to and can enjoy playing netball through her position as head coach of the Wheatbelt Flames Netball Club and her role on the committee of the Wheatbelt Netball Region.

Adele’s personal efforts have included supporting players who may not otherwise be able to participate due to financial challenges, providing transportation to and from game in Perth and on some occasions has offered her own home to those in need.

“I am absolutely thrilled to receive the Australia Post One Netball Community Award,” Mrs Simmons said.

“It is wonderful to recognise the Club and Wheatbelt Netball Region for their strong commitment to the development of netball in regional and rural communities in Western Australia, particularly in support of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander netball community,” said Adele.

Mrs Simmons will receive a visit from an Australia Post One Netball Ambassador where she’ll be presented with an Australia Post Load&Go Visa Prepaid Gift Card, a netball signed by the 2018 Samsung Australian Diamonds team and a certificate from the Australia Post One Netball Program.
