The Shire of Northam Council has voted for Main Roads WA to re-assess the speed limit of Mitchell Avenue after a request from the developers of the Northam Eco-lifestyle Village.
At a council meeting in July council requested that more information be provided before they made a decision about lowering the speed limit around the under-construction lifestyle village.
Director of H&H Development Enterprises, Mike Hollett attended the council meeting on 15 August to advise councilors that the company had a signed petition from all home owners along Mitchell Avenue, bar one that wasn’t at home at the time, to say that they supported the lowering of speed and had concerns about safety.
The motion to request Main Roads WA to undertake a reassessment of the speed limit of the entire length Mitchell Avenue was moved by Councilor Steven Pollard and seconded by Councilor Mencshelyi.
The reccomended speed limits given to Main Roads are 50km from Newcastle Street to Fernie Road roundabout, 60km from Fernie Road Roundabout to Purkiss Drive, and 80km from Purkiss Drive to Great Eastern Highway.
The recomendation was carried six votes to two, with Councillors Davidson and Williams voting against it.
