On Monday 13 August, Northam Primary School students were entertained by the musical group Makukuhan, who perform Indonesian Gamelan style traditional music from the islands of Bali and Java.
This gave our students an insight into another culture as well as a new style of music and range of instruments.
NPS was the first of many schools the group will be perform for over the next couple of weeks as they head out through the Wheatbelt and into the Goldfields.
Musica Viva organise school music performances by quality performers throughout each state every year and select different types of musical groups to travel each year.
Musica Viva were responsible for organising this event, so that the students could experience a cultural incursion.
They were also the driving force in finding the funding to provide the donated instruments.
CBH came on board and not only sponsored the performance, but also donated the funds to supply the school with a set of 15 ukuleles to be used to boost the music program in the school.
This wonderful donation will benefit not only this year’s children but children for many years to come, and will be able to learn to play these instruments and play them together with our other classroom instruments.
Members of the Northam Shire, chief executive officer Jason Whiteaker, President Chris Antonio and Deputy President Michael Ryan were invited and came to the performance.
Stephen Newton-Howes, Business Relationship Manager from CBH Group, and members from Musica Viva, Chris van Tuinen, WA State Manager and Helen Dwyer, WA State Coordinator were impressed with the performance.
Also in attendance were Northam Primary School Councillor Fiona Brayshaw, P&C president Cindy Clements and P&C committee member Kelly Beard.
Anita Hayes is the library officer at Northam Primary School.
