You will now be able to have your own mini Avon Descent with the Shire of Northam teaming up with a Perth-based outdoor adventure company to give tourists and locals the opportunity to rent kyaks to use on the Avon River.
The Shire of Northam said following feedback received from both the community and visitors, it was recognised that the Avon River was widely underutilised.
As a result expressions of interest were requested from suitably experienced operators to offer kayak hire on the Avon River town pool on a trial basis to assess viability of this as a long-term offering.
With help from Destination Perth and the Tourism Council, a number of avenues were explored before Council staff met with the owner of Perth-based company Water Wanderers to discuss the project.
From this meeting, it was suggested that Kieran Simpson- owner of Perth’s newest adventure company Out Bush Adventures would be a ‘good fit’ to both trial the initiative.
During the trial period, kayaks will be available to hire on the following dates:
- 11th & 12th August
- 18th & 19th August
- 1st & 2nd September
- 15th & 16th September
- 29th & 30th September
- 6th & 7th October
- 20th & 21st October
- 10th & 11th November
- 17th & 18th November
Three hire options will be offered during the trial, each on double kayaks, including both guided and self-guided tours of the Avon River.
Prices for hire and tours will range from $60 to $150.
