Central Midlands Senior High School student Sena Lefroy was one of 22 regional WA students who attended a tour of Curtin University as a part of their annual Curtin AHEAD in Confidence Camp.
The 22 Year 12 students from across regional WA toured the Bentley campus as part of the program that aims to encourage them to consider furthering their studies after school.
Curtin AHEAD (Addressing Higher Educational Access Disadvantage) In Confidence Camp is designed to equip students with the skills and confidence to move from the country to the city to pursue their university studies after high school.
The Curtin AHEAD program works with schools and students who are traditionally under-represented in higher education.
Students from regional areas including Moora, Albany, Denmark, Midland, Kalgoorlie, Narrogin and Esperance spent the week exploring Perth and participating in activities designed to enhance their understanding of the university experience and engage with the support services available to help them when becoming an independent student.
The students were given the opportunity to tour the five WA universities, explore the Perth CBD, learn budgeting and cooking skills and attend ATAR revision seminars.
As part of their tour of Curtin University’s Bentley campus, students were given a tour of student housing as well as provided an insight into the educational opportunities available through the Faculties of Science and Engineering, Health Sciences, Business and Law and Humanities at Curtin.
As a result of the program, 2017 In Confidence Camp participant, Matthew Gibson from Mukinbudin District High School & SIDE, made the move from Mukinbudin to Perth this year after having participated in the camp to study Advanced Computing at Curtin University.
