A Toodyay man has avoided imprisonment after pleading guilty to drunkenly falling onto his son causing a major knife wound.
Stephen Logan pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding when he appeared in Northam Magistrates Court on Monday 16 June.
At 1.30am on November 30 2017, Logan had been celebrating his 54th birthday with drinks earlier that day.
He headed home where he continued to consume alcohol.
Logan became threatening towards his son about a knife fight while at his home on Drummond Street.
His son was sitting on a couch inside the home holding a knife when Logan drunkenly stumbled and fell onto him, causing the knife to lodge into his upper left thigh leaving just the handle exposed.
His son was taken to Northam Hospital for medical attention.
Logan said he had no recollection of events because of his level of intoxication.
Logan runs a business with his son.
Magistrate Jennifer Hawkins said although Logan wasn’t armed, he had made threats towards his son.
“This is serious offending involving a very big knife,” said Magistrate Hawkins as she showed a photo of the knife to the court.
“You caused significant injury with your reckless behaviour.”
Logan was sentenced to seven months imprisonment, suspended for 10 months.
He will have to complete a supervision program for alcohol misuse.
