Last week’s golfing calendar started on Friday with a two-person ambrose event sponsored by MJW Mitsubishi Electric.
An open ambrose event allows both regular players and occasional players to combine to come up with a good enough score to take home a trophy.
While some groups were blowing hot and cold others were keeping their cool, none better than Peter Beazley and Roger Podmore who used their green-keeping knowledge to their advantage, to come in with a gross score of 73 nett 64.25 and take out the trophy for the “regular” golfers. Runners-up in this category were Brad Parker and Fred Hill with 65.25, third R. Sinclair and Adam Pearse with 67.
In the mixed category it was Ruth and Geoff Hall winning with a nett 66 beating the double Hubbles of Max and Stephanie with 77.75.
In the section for golfers without handicaps it was Cam Stewart and T. Fernihough taking the win with a nett 70.50 from S. Longmuir and G. Dunkerton with nett 76.50; and third S. Romaz and T. Robinson with nett 78.

Saturday and Sunday’s event was the Corolin Cup, the Club’s biggest closed event, sponsored by the Dempster family. Two rounds of stroke usually sorts out the contenders from the pretenders, however this year after 36 holes of golf the result was decided by a single stroke.
Peter Flint was striking his irons well, sparking some excellent golf, after tying with Cameron Stewart on Saturday with a nett 68; Sunday’s score was even better. Paring holes 4, 6, 11, 12, 14 and 18 and a birdie on No. 5 Flint had a great score or a nett 66, making a total nett of 134.
Cameron Stewart hits a long ball, but needed to be good in all facets of the game to take out this event.
With a nett 68 on Saturday Stewart started slowly only paring No. 2 in the first six holes, and having a double bogey on No. 5, but then he turned his game around paring 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 17 and 18 and birding 16. Stewart’s score of a nett 65 gave him an overall score of 133 clinching the trophy by a solitary shot, with Flint an honourable second.
Gross trophy went to Matt Woods with a 79, 82 gross 161.
Elders Novelties – Saturday: No. 8 long putt – Geoff Hall; No. 16 long drive – Matt Woods; Sunday: No. 3 best third shot – Bubba Allert; No. 6 nearest the pin and money hole – M. Spadaccini; No. 17 long putt – M. Woods. Brad Parker scored an Eagle on the par 5 No. 5.
