The ball is rolling on the process to relocate six tennis courts to the Wongan Sports Pavilion.
Tenders and quotes will be sought for the new synthetic courts, lighting and fencing at the Wongan Sports Pavilion.
This is the first stage of a bigger project which will see numerous local sports headquartered in one place.
Through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu received $435,837 earlier this year towards the tennis courts project, with stage one costing about $1.6 million.
The courts are part of a larger project to redevelop the Wongan Sports Pavilion, which will include upgrades to the fitness centre, change rooms and toilets, meeting rooms, a playground and alfresco area and upgraded function rooms.
Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray said he was pleased with the move.
“Sporting clubs and facilities are at the heart of community life in the regions because they bring people together, not only to be active but to connect with each other,” he said.
“Equally, quality facilities are important to encourage people to be active.
“Having lights on these courts will also mean that locals will be able to play at night, especially in summer, when the weather is cooler.”
Agricultural Region MLC Laurie Graham congratulated the Wongan Ballidu Shire and community of sports volunteers for their hard work and fundraising to qualify for this grant.
“This is great news for the Wongan Hills community and tennis in the Wheatbelt,” she said.
“Sporting clubs are a vital part of regional communities providing more than just a game, the social side of sports like tennis provide a real boost to the whole town.
“These new facilities will not only provide a great place to play tennis, they will help to keep sport in Wongan Hills alive and vibrant for years to come.”
