A Northam woman has been sentenced to 80 hours community service and ordered to pay $3,000 in reparations for smashing windows at an employment service after being told her Centrelink payments were being suspended.
Kellie Lee Garlett pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal damage when she appeared in Northam Magistrates Court for her first hearing on Monday 18 June.
At 1pm on 25 May, Garlett attended Northam APM employment services on Fitzgerald Street, where she was told her Centrelink support was suspended because she missed an appointment.
She became agressive, throwing items from desks and smashing a desktop computer.
Garlett left the premises and went to Bernard Park where she got a rock, returned to APM and damaged two window panels.
Magaistrate Jennifer Hawkins told Garlett her actions caused significant damage.
“You know you have a criminal record,” Magistrate Hawkins said.
“This wasn’t a small offence.
“If you continue to offend like this you will get prison time.”
Garlett said she had hoped to go to jail on the day of the incident.
Garlett was ordered to complete 80 hours community work and pay $3,000 in reparations to APM.
