The Shire of Northam has committed to assist seniors in becoming and remaining active through the Senior Sport program funding up to $150 for over 60s who live in the Shire of Northam and hold a pension concession card.
To deliver the program, the Shire of Northam has partnered with Regional Physio and In Balance Fitness, Northam Seniors Citizens Social Club, Northam Lawn Bowls, Euphoria Gym and the El Caballo Golf Club.
Owner of In Balance Fitness, Alex Gazis-Morris, has said seniors who attend are there for a reason, whether it is to maintain mobility, aid in balance, help sleeping disorders or reduce the effects of arthritis.
“We have quite a few regulars who aim to attend a class at least once a week,” Ms Gazis-Morris.
“The Senior Sport Program has given our senior generation the opportunity to continue to live the best life they can.
“The participants utilising this funding are on a pension and without this program it is hard for them to continue our classes.
“I think this program is the perfect way to give back youth to our seniors and help them live longer lives.”
The Shire of Northam said the senior sport program is proving to be a successful initiative with positive feedback being received.
Benefits identified from the program include connecting with the community, a safe and monitored environment and financial assistance.
Applications for funding can be made through the Northam Recreation Centre.
