Tanya Cox saw a lack of female football in her town of Kellerberrin when her daughter Jess wanted to sign up and join the sport.
Frequent driving to Perth was a part of the sporting commitment, with no female teams around Tanya decided to liaise with other towns to start up a girls competition for the 2018 season.
Avon Youth Girls is a competition for girls aged 13 to 18 with teams from Bindoon, York, Northam with a mixed Wheatbelt team for Cunderdin, Tammin and Merredin.
Round four took place on Sunday where Bindoon took on the Wheatbelt in Northam.
Ethel Sibasado is the captain for Bindoon, made up of boarders from Edmund Rice College.
Ethel said she had always played netball and she was the first female in her family to play AFL. The 16-year-old hopes to one day play AFLW for the Eagles.
Ethel plays all positions as a part of Avon Youth Girls but said her favourite part of the game is tackling.
Fifteen-year-old Panashe Mudimu from Merredin said the introduction of AFLW saw a rise in the participation rates of girls at her school.
“Before AFLW we didn’t have many girls wanting to play,” she said. “Now we have enough girls to make two teams at school.”
The girls meet every second Sunday to play 12 minute quarters and scores are not recorded.
