It was another full weekend of golf last week commencing with the June Monthly Mug on Saturday sponsored by Liquor Barons Northam.
No one likes to be called a mug golfer unless, of course, you are the winner of the monthly mug, a much sought after trophy.
The course has improved each day since the rain and the greens are in the best condition.
In order to win the stroke event the golfer needs to be consistent through all 18 holes, both off the tee box and on the greens.
They say that golf is like drinking, the more shots you have, the messier the outcome at the end of the day.
While a few players were amassing large scores, several players were having a great day on the course.
But there was none better than veteran Bruce Smart paring on 2, 6, and 7 on the bottom nine holes and 14 on the top with a birdie on 13 to cap off a good round.
Smart, with a score of nett 71, took out the winner’s trophy, one shot better than Peter Beazley, Phil Becker, Peter Richards and Matt Woods.
Beazley took the runners-up trophy on a countback.
Elders insurance novelties hole on number 3, longest drive Don Bates on 7, best second shot Don Bates on 12.
Nearest the pin was Don Bates on 15, best third shot and money hole was Cameron Stewart.
Stewart also scored an eagle on 15 and took home 46 golf balls being the first eagle scored in nearly a year.
Sunday’s event was the captain versus president match play sponsored by Rivers Edge Café.
Although not a large field it was quality over quantity in the annual event.
The captain’s team, led by club captain Max Hubble, comprised of the captain’s match committee, a cohesive talented team.
They were up against the president’s team led by Chadd Hunt, an unruly rabble.
Hubble’s pre-game trade of Richards to the president’s team for Allert proved a match winner, with Allert’s best on course performance a highlight of the day.
Results: Hubble defeated Richards, Allert took care of Hunt and Bates got the best of Smart.
Next week’s events – Saturday, June 9: Gillett Putter and Veterans Trophy and Sunday, June 10, is the second round of the club championships.
