Springfield Cup
LAST weekend was full of golfing action with 36 holes of stableford golf to decide the 2018 winner of the Springfield Cup.
Despite quite a few golfers looking like Homer Simpson, the Springfield Cup is not named after the cartoon family’s township but the property on which the golf course resides.
The Springfield Cup is one of the golf clubs major events, which the winners name is not only engraved on the Cup but also on the clubs honour board, enabling bragging rights for perpetuity.
The first round on Saturday was sponsored by Purslowe Tinetti Funeral Homes.
The assembled golfers were confronted by a wet course, something they hadn’t encountered for more than 10 months.
A heavy course and fast greens sorted out most of the field, with only a few players having scores anywhere near to playing to their handicaps.
Players have a lot of pressure on them when playing in a major event particularly in the wind and rain.
Pressure they say makes diamonds, however very few “sparklers” appeared at the end of the day, perhaps you can’t make diamonds when you are working with gravel.
Sunday was the second round of the Cup, sponsored by Grafton Electrics.
Over half the field were still within hitting distance of the leading players and weather conditions were a little easier.
Again scores were at the lower end of the spectrum, however a few players revelled in the conditions.
At the end of the two days the top scorers were:
Winner Saturday’s round: Chadd Hunt 37 points;
Winner Sunday’s round: Cameron Stewart 37 points;
Runner-up Springfield Cup: Phil Becker 70 points;
Winner of the 2018 Springfield Cup: Kevin Smith with 71 points.
