On a cold and windy Sunday Railways travelled down to Beverley to take on the Redbacks on a ground that has not been kind to the Bombers in recent years.
Reserves
The Reserves started the day sitting a game clear on the ladder and were looking to extend that margin in a classic eight-point game.
After a tight first quarter the Bombers took charge in the second kicking four goals to two to take a 19-point lead into half-time.
With coach Junior Davis away in Melbourne stand in coaches Lobby and Richo got the boys firing in the third and piled on three straight goals to take a 38-point lead into the last quarter.
This proved unassailable for the Redbacks, eventually going down 10.14 (74) to 5.8 (38).
Jack Lathey made a welcome return after a serious knee injury and along with young jet Kelvin Quartermaine were instrumental in the win.
They were also well supported by Ben Armstrong, new dad Glenny de Blecourt, Ash Parker and Gavin Winmar.
Reuben Thompson kicked four goals, along with Quartermaine two goals and singles to Army, Fyfe and Riley.
League
The League boys were coming off a huge win over Cunderdin the week before but knew Beverley would be tough on their home ground.
Beverley started well having most of the play in the first quarter but wasted opportunities kicking 1.11 to Railways 2.3 to take a slender two-point lead into the first change.
The second quarter saw a very tight and tough contest with the Bombers wresting back the lead kicking 2.1 to one goal to have a five-point buffer at half-time.
The second half was dominated by big man and ex AFL Eagle and Demon Paul Johnson who gave first use to his midfielders and drove the ball forward giving the Redback forwards multiple opportunities.
Beverley ended up kicking a very accurate 10.2 to Railways 4.6 to record a comfortable 27-point victory.
Finals scores:
BFC 12.13 (85) – RFC 8.10 (58).
Richie Dewar, Dan Negus and Nathan de Blecourt battled hard all day, and along with Kepler Bradley kicking four goals were in Railways best.
McCallion finished with two goals and Hunter and Kickett one each.
Smith and Murace were the major goal kickers for the home team with three each and Ruggiero kicked two.
This Sunday the Bombers will host the York Roos in a much needed home game for the club and will look to get a good crowd to cheer the boys on for a victory in both grades.
The Federals Football Club had a bye this round.
