A man has been fined $1500 after he took home a moped he saw broken down on the side of Great Eastern Highway in Wooroloo.
Jason Charles Mackley pleaded guilty to stealing a motor vehicle and driving it without consent, during his first appearance at Northam Magistrates Court on Monday 21 May.
Mackley said he had seen the moped on the side of the road for several days in April 2018, before he took it home, removed the registration and rode it around bush land.
A month later, on April 19, Mackley’s step-children were seen riding the vehicle around town.
The 30-year-old said his actions were “stupid” and he thought the moped would be destroyed if it stayed on the side of the highway.
Magistrate Mark Millington told Mackley it was not his property to take.
Makley was fined $1500.
