For the third straight week the Railways Football Club hit the road to take on the 2014 dual premiers Cunderdin, and although both grades were sitting win-less on the bottom of the ladder it’s always a tough game against the Maggies and players needed to be at their best to get the win.
The Reserves started the day with League coach Matthew Stokes pulling on the boots for the first time this year and proving he still had it, finishing with four snags for the day. Big fellas James Hitsert and Jake Clark also made a welcome return to bolster the ruck department and the boys never looked back. After an eight-goal to three first half the Bombers went on to win by 54; final scores RFC 13.14 (92) – CFC 6.2 (38). Up and coming young fella Jarvis Kjellgren kicked three goals, Mainy Davis two and singles each to Jake Clarke, Tarkyn Narrier, Keith Garlett and Shannon Davis. Best players: Bradman Collard, Keith Garlett, Jaron Kjellgren and Clive Davis.
After a heavy loss to Keller/Tammin last week the League boys were determined to get the win and with Steve Armstrong making a welcome return, along with former Docker and Essendon Bomber big man Kepler Bradley, our forward line looked dangerous. This gave coach Stokes the luxury of putting Dan Negus into the backline, and alongside skipper Pups it was going to be a tough day for the Cunderdin forwards. The first quarter was a one-sided affair with Railways booting 8.3 to the Magpies 0.0 and this continued with Railways kicking five in the second, six in the third and seven in the final, restricting the Maggies to one goal. Final scores RFC 26.14 (170) – CFC 1.1 (7). Price, Heitia, and Holmes were impassable in the backline and Davy Grafton, Steven Caccetta, John Army and James Morris gave plenty of drive through the middle. Bradley kicked seven goals on debut, with Jeremy Power six, Steve Army and Tyrone Garlett four each, Deekan Garlett two on debut and singles to D. Grafton, J. Morris and J. Kickett. Stokesy must be pleased with the mix of the team at the moment, with two more juniors in Bailey O’Driscoll and Deekan Garlett debuting, and along with the experience of Bradley and Armstrong will look to take it up to the Redbacks this Sunday in Beverley.
The Fast Tart’s fought hard with a lot of out’s this week but went down to the 2017 premiers Cunderdin 64 v 26. A big thanks to Karen O’Driscoll for stepping in to play and to Demi O’Driscoll for umpiring with the absence of Justine Stokes; a job well done. Awards went to Madison Hunter (MVP and Opponents Choice) for ever consistent work through to centre court and Team Tart went to Kiya Jacobsen for never giving up and a solid defence.
