The Northam Amateur Basketball Association has been awarded $4000 as one of the first sporting clubs to receive money from the Community TAB of Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA).
Out of more than 200 sporting clubs from around WA who applied for a grant from Community TAB, Northam Amateur Basketball Association is one of two groups to receive a grant this month.
The grant will go towards purchasing an electronic score system for their inside courts.
Northam Amateur Basketball Association President Terry Bell said generous outside funding and sponsorships like Community TAB grants are vital in the Club growth and success.
“Being able to upgrade the scoring equipment will enable more people to actively engage in the conduct of our games as the system is basic and extremely user friendly,” Mr Bell said.
“We have found it difficult in the past for volunteers to score as their understanding of the game and the score procedure was limited, therefore this new system not only brings us in-line with the systems used widely across the state, it will enable a wider group of volunteers to participate and will also reduce the time our committee volunteers take to manually load scores into the sporting pulse website.
“The Northam Amateur Basketball Association has players competing from the wider Wheatbelt community including towns of Cunderdin, Meckering, Goomalling, York, Toodyay, Bakers Hill, Wundowie and of course Northam, and with over 600 active playing members, basketball is a popular sport in the Wheatbelt and our association is proud to give people the opportunity to participate.
“Our aim is to keep our playing fees low so that there is nothing prohibiting participation in our sport.”
The Association thanked Community TAB for the opportunity to participate in the grant program.
RWWA Chief Executive Officer Richard Burt said it is an exciting new initiative for Community TAB and a great opportunity for sporting clubs.
“We recognise the importance of grass roots sport throughout WA and understand that it takes time and resources to keep a club running within the community, so we are excited to be giving the opportunity to help relieve this burden on clubs,” Mr Burt said.
“RWWA has been supporting the WA sport and recreation industry for many years through providing over $30million of TAB turnover over 10 years to the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) and more recently through Community TAB sponsoring the WA Football League and WA Integrated Football Program.
“Community TAB has been giving back to the WA community since 2014 through major partnerships, state-wide fundraising programs and sponsorship of prestigious events.”
Community TAB will provide at least one grant each month to a sporting club to further their contribution to the sport and recreation industry in WA.
Once a club applies for a grant, the application will stay within the pool until the grant is awarded.
