WHAT a glorious day at Northam last Sunday for the Federals with their first clash of the season against the unknown Beverley Football Club. The day began with Reserves coach Steve Rakowski reminding his charges of past results, while League coach Alistair Smith urged his players to make a good start to the 2018 season.
Reserves: The reserves game started in typical round one fashion with numerous errors being made by both sides as they tried to stamp their authority on the game. This was reflected in the scores at the first change as Beverley managed two straight goals while Federals’ poor goal front conversion rate saw them score 3 goals, 6 points, taking a 12-point lead into the first change. The second term was much the same as both sides started to feel the effects of the warm conditions. Federals managed to add a further 2.1 while Beverley added 1.3, giving Federals a 16-point lead at the long break. Beverley came out fired up in the third and with all players lifting managed to outscore Federals by a margin of six points for the quarter, reducing the home sides lead to only a 10-point margin. The final term belonged to Federals and with the hot weather and Beverley’s concerted third term effort to catch up, they had run their race and could only manage two points, while Federals kicked 3.3 running out eventual winners by 29.
League: The league side, under the guidance of coach Alistair Smith, was put through their team structures before the game and it paid off with Federals quick out of the blocks kicking 6.1 to Beverley 1.4; their first goal coming at the 18-minute mark, giving the home side a handy 27-point lead at the first break. The second term was more even with Beverley reducing Federals’ lead to 23 at the half-time break. The third quarter belonged to Federals after Beverley had spent their energy in the second term reducing the margin. The home side took full advantage kicking 5.2 to Beverley’s 2.2, taking a 41-point lead into the final term. The last term was a reflection of the previous with Federals kicking 5.2 to Beverley’s 3.2 giving the home side a comfortable win by 53. The final scores of Federals 19.8 to Beverley 10.9 were not a true indication of the standard of the game.
Netball: The Federal Fillies had a good win defeating Beverley 65 to 47. Well done girls.
