2018 GOLF SEASON – ROUND 1
WHILE a group of finally tuned athletes assembled on the Gold Coast, consisting of runners, swimmers and tri athletes, another group of sloggers, whackers and try-athletes assembled on the Northam Golf Course. The un-tuned athletes were ready for another season of winter golf which kicked off last Saturday with a stableford event.
A fine day and challenging course confronted the field of 17 players vying for the Match Committee trophy and a place on the winners dais. The honour of the opening drive of the season went to long-time member Bob Allert, with the build of a weight lifter, the wind up of a discus thrower the arm action of a javelin competitor and the distance of a shot putter the opening drive was dispatched and the season underway.
While some players were quick out of the blocks banking some early points, stableford is more a marathon than a sprint.
Andrew Quin started slowly but was soon in the groove with a birdie on No. 4 followed by pars on No’s 5, 6 and 7.
At the end of the day Quin was able to keep the field at bay to retain the lead and take out the trophy with a very credible 43 points. Has Quin peaked too early or will he continue to be in final contention throughout the season?
Runners-up were Trevor Turnock with 40 points and Grant Scollay with 38. Novelty winners were Peter Roe and Neil James.
New members are always welcome; experienced golfers or new players, call club captain Max Hubble on 0407 957 874.
Next week’s game on Saturday, April 21 will be the Alan’s Auto Electric trophy, a stableford event.
