A 22-year-old Northam man has been handed a 10-month community order after he was found in possession of a knuckle duster, scalpel, a large fishing knife and blades.
Martin Phillippe Blurton pleaded guilty to nine weapon and drug charges in the Northam Magistrates court that included carrying a knife with intent to cause fear.
On October 13 a search warrant was executed at an address on Wellington Street where Blurton was living at the time.
During the search police found nine cannabis seeds, three grams of cannabis and a range of drug paraphernalia. Blurton said he was planning to give the seeds to someone else.
Police also found Blurton in possession of a knife.
Magistrate Jennifer Hawkins told the court that supplying drugs held serious penalties that included jail time.
On December 4 police were called to a disturbance at Apex Park in Northam were they found Blurton and two other people at a table with a gram of cannabis.
Blurton was found in possession of a hard plastic knuckle duster, a scalpel, a large fishing knife and blades.
Defence lawyer Sylvia Crombie told the court that Blurton had been exposed to drugs from a young age.
She said Blurton now had an ongoing drug problem himself and had been self-referred to counseling in Northam.
Ms Crombie said Blurton had previous employment as a barista and had the potential to make something positive of his life.
Ms Hawkins said Blurton was “out of control” at the moment.
“For a smart young man you’re not serving yourself well,” she said.
“I recognise that you have been attending Holyoake.
“You have a lot of potential but the lack of attendance isn’t in your favour.”
Blurton was already on a community order which was due to end the day after his court appearance.
He was handed a $400 fine for breaching the order, a 10-month community order and 60-hours community work for this offences.
