A man was sentenced to a seven-month jail concurrent term in the Northam Courthouse on Monday after he broke his home detention and then drove a vehicle which became bogged and caught on fire.
Simon Christopher Keogh’s licence had been suspended about eight months prior to the incident, on March 3, 2016.
Keogh pleaded guilty to having no authority to drive when he appeared via video link from Acacia Prison, in the Northam Magistrates Court.
Prosecuting Sergeant Phil Milne told the court Keogh was driving a yellow Hyundai through Goomalling on November 26, 2016. He lost control and became bogged, before his vehicle caught on fire.
Keogh was arrested and had remained in custody at Acacia Prison since the day of the offence, Sgt Milne said. Defence lawyer Jack Trainor said Keogh had taken his partner’s medication prior to the incident.
Magistrate Jennifer Hawkins said Keogh had multiple prior convictions and was currently serving a four-year and four-month jail term for similar offending.
Keogh was sentenced to a seven-month concurrent jail term and a 12-month cumulative licence suspension.
He was made eligible for parole.
