Students at York District High School (YDH) were big winners in the Avon Valley Arts Society (AVAS) 2018 calendar project, funded by RAC’s ‘Elephant in the Wheatbelt’ campaign.
AVAS called on schools in the Avon Valley region to participate in a road safety art competition with winners to feature in a calendar that would be distributed to local families early next year.
The topics covered by the kindy to Year 6 students included driver distraction (texting) and drink driving.
Congratulations to Emily Galbraith, Leila Beaton, Lana Wheeler, Mary Chinn, Chayce King, Katie Allen and Zara McGagh, and their art teacher Ms Cassandra Manning.
Mary Chinn’s work also received a Highly Commended award and a gift voucher.
Winners were selected on artistic merit and originality, and the key messages.
All 159 pieces of work from the local schools were displayed in an exhibition at Northam Town Hall in November, and 14 winners were selected for a 2018 calendar.
AVAS president Cliff Simpson said many local primary schools got involved that he would like to thank including Avonvale, Beverley, Dowerin, Cunderdin, Meckering, Northam, West Northam and York.
“Children show their unique views of road safety in this work and their parents and other adults will learn such a lot from this!” Mr Simpson said.
The calendar will be delivered to all primary schools in the region and also to the Community Resource Centres.
The calendars are free, and there is one for every family with a primary school aged child and anyone else who would like one.
Mr Simpson also wanted to thank RAC for funding and all the schools for their enthusiastic participation.
