The Shire of Northam RoadWise Committee has got the help of local Hockeyroos player Aleisha Power to deliver a road safety message.
This week, the organisation released some new statistics on wearing seatbelts and how they help protect drivers and passengers.
“You are 10 times more likely to be killed in a road crash if you’re not wearing a seatbelt in a car,” the Northam RoadWise spokesperson said.
“Around 34 people are killed in road crashes in WA each year, while not wearing a seat belt.”
They also said that a crash at 40 kilometres per hour is equivalent to falling from a two-storey building onto concrete.
Hockeyroos player Aleisha Power said it is important to buckle up.
“Just like a goal keeper you should protect yourself and your passengers,” she said.
“Ensure everyone in your car is wearing a seatbelt or a correctly fitted car child restraint.
“Seatbelts have been proven to reduce the amount of injuries a person may experience in a road crash, as most injuries to drivers and passengers are caused by contact with the steering wheel, dashboard, windscreen or the sides and roof of a vehicle.”
