A Northam man was sentenced to a suspended jail term when he appeared in the Northam Magistrates Court on Monday for attempting to receive seven parcels of meth and cannabis though the mail to later sell.
Jordan Daniel Anthony Thompson pleaded guilty to the seven charges of attempting to possess prohibited drugs with intent to sell or supply after being charged on May 15, 2017.
Sergeant Phil Milne said the parcels, headed for the 21-year-old’s address, were intercepted by Australia Post employees in Northam and Perth between January 17-24.
Sergeant Milne said Thompson told police during an interview he was “not a user, just a middle man sometimes”
All together, 6.38 grams of methamphetamine and 69 grams of cannabis was seized.
Sgt Milne said Thompson told police during an interview he was “not a user, just a middle man sometimes”.
Northam Police told the Avon Valley and Wheatbelt Advocate, the total street value of the intercepted drugs was approximately $7000.
Lawyer Jack Trainor said Thompson committed the crimes to cover family living expenses and regrets what he did.
He struggles with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, which skews his perception of right or wrong, among other things, Mr Trainor said.
Northam Magistrate Jennifer Hawkins said the crime was serious and the penalty must reflect that in order to deter Thompson and others.
She took into account his personal problems and young age.
Thompson was given an 11-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
He was also ordered to undertake a 12 month intensive supervision program.
In another courthouse matter on Monday, a woman had her licence disqualified for nine months after being caught driving with a suspended licence in Northam.
Kelly Ann Ryder submitted an endorsed plea of guilty and did not appear in court on the day.
On top of her licence disqualification, Ryder was fined $1000 with costs of $188.
