You might imagine after an off-season lasting seven months, the Northam men golfers may not be in the best physical shape, and the players in attendance didn’t disappoint.
Twenty golfers of varying shapes and abilities were champing at the bit to start the 2017 season.
The first event of the year was a four ball better ball competition where teams of two players used the best score each hole.
The honour of the first drive of the season went to Leila Roberts, the daughter of Mike Keefe, a much loved club member who passed away last year.
Despite the lack of a strong pre-season many players produced great scores, none better than Bob Allert and Peter Oliver winning with a score of 47 points. Oliver mentioned the win was great particularly as it was also his 50th wedding anniversary.
Runners up, losing on a countback were Peter Beazley and Mike OShea also with 47pts. Third place went to Peter Bray and Geoff Hall with 46pts. Novelties: Best second shot No. 2 D. Bates; Best second shot No. 3 G. Hall Longest drive No. 16 G. Balt Longest putt on No. 18 G. Hall.
Next week: Saturday, April 15 stableford; mid week scroungers start this Wednesday, April 12 with the tee off from 2pm onwards.
All new players welcome to scroungers and weekend golf. For more info call the Northam Country Club.
