THE 2015 National Ballooning Championships kicked off with a bang at this year's host community, Northam, putting on a festival on August 29.
The highlight of the evening was a spectacular 'balloon glow' display on the Henry Street oval in Northam with nine balloons lighting up the night sky in time to music provided by the band 'Switch'.
Estimates are 4000 people enjoyed the display and special thanks must go to the Championship competitors who put on the balloon glow.
International and Australian balloonists including the RAAF Balloon have filled the skies of Northam for the past week and competitors have participated in a number of challenges to test their skill and nerve.
Shire of Northam's executive manager community services Ross Rayson said hosting the National Championships has provided a unique experience for the people of Northam and has provided a fantastic opportunity to showcase Northam and the Avon Valley.
"The positive effect that the Championships have had on Northam is incredible, with large numbers of people flocking here to follow this event throughout the week," he said.
"It has been a pleasure hosting this event in our community.
"I would also like to congratulate the Northam Aero Club and the Championships organising Committee for the outstanding work they have done, which has ensured the event has been such a success."
